The Dalles KIWANIS PROGRAMS: Kiwanis meetings return to Spooky's every Thursday at noon and visitors are welcome. Programs coming up:

— Aug. 5 D-21 update by former board chair John Nelson and new chair Jose Aparicio.

— Aug. 12 speaker is David Warden, new executive director of Mid-Columbia Medical Center Health Foundation.

— Aug. 19 School board member Rebecca Thistlethwaite reports on the North Wasco Co. Education Foundation.

— Aug. 26 Club business at the noontime meeting.

— Aug. 29 (Sunday) Kiwanians serve Community Meal.

Karl Vercouteren

Karl Vercouteren came to The Dalles in 1977 to become pastor of United Church of Christ Congregational. Early on he joined Cascade Singers and the Original Courthouse board, reflecting life-long interests in music and history. Since retirement in 2008 he has taken on several projects writing about local history.
